Engaging Headlines

With digital platforms for news on the rise, enticing readers to click on articles becomes just as important as the content itself. Writers and journalists try to create headlines and blurbs to generated traffic to the website and their article. Its a delicate balance between being honest yet

alluring while avoiding becoming clickbait. I will show the websites that I frequent for news and how their headlines play an important role in the experience.

One of the main news sources that I use would be Al Jazeera. This online publication is one of my top sources for international news. The headlines for the articles are short and to-the-point, delivering the overall theme of the piece in a few words. Most of the headlines on Al Jazeera answer the questions who, what and where; while leaving the when and why to be found in the article itself. This entices readers to find the answer to any additional questions they might have inside. One of the headlines of the day that had lured me into reading the article was Mexican peasants, victims barred from pope. This headline made me want to find out more about the situation more than any other article on the page. It gave me just enough to know what is happening with a group of Mexican residents, yet leave me wondering why the situation is occurring.

Another aspectis the summary blurb. It adds to the headlines' effect by expanding on the questions answered by the headline itself. These blurbs further the mystery that comes with the topic of the article.
